K = What do you know? I know that I enjoy games, as do others. I enjoy having fun.
W = What do you want to learn? How I can implement the enjoyment of games in an educational based environment. What is gamification?
Building differentiation into games.
L = What have you learned? Padlet – A fun and easy way of adding notes
Reflection I have learnt a new way of looking at 'fun' and the ‘Understanding’ as to why it is fun. Education through gaming helps engagement at many levels.
Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
Working Mathematically - develop understanding and fluency in mathematics through inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning
MA3-6NA Selects and applies strategies for multiplication and division, and applies the order of operation to calculation involving more operations.
MA3-2WM –Select and applies appropriate problem solving strategies, including the use of digital technologies, in undertaking investigations.
MA4-1WM- Communicates and connects Mathematical ideas using appropriate terminology, diagrams and symbols
Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
Although year 7 through to 12 like clash of clans – I find it too slow eg reward is not quick enough Primary games however are targeted at quick, short and exciting reward – King of Maths Fun Fun Fun!! I used to hate the idea of rote learning, I used to see it as monotonous boring and repetitive, however if you can make it fun it does not have the same negative connotations.
Outcomes and activities results done in class with Activities and Games found online.
MA3-6NA Selects and applies strategies for multiplication and division, and applies the order of operation to calculation involving more operations. I created a gamification reward chart in the class so that they could see their progress. And had them playing King of Maths as their own challenge to help increase their speed and accuracy of multiplication and division to ensure greater reward on the class reward chart.
MA3-2WM –Select and applies appropriate problem solving strategies, including the use of digital technologies, in undertaking investigations.
Gamification activities can achieve this, through problem solving games, feedback from the student, reward from the teacher. Each student can be involved and change position on the leader board from week to week depending on their level of involvement with the activity
MA4-1WM- Communicates and connects Mathematical ideas using appropriate terminology, diagrams and symbols The activity involved sorting into piles the correct terminology to match the correct diagram as well as symbol.
